Playing with glass and fire
Mike Cavanaugh helps Courtney Atkinson make a glass bead. Cavanaugh held a beading demonstration in the basement of the Legion Hall last Saturday and gave people free lessons on creating glass beads all day. The process is seeminlgly fairly simple and involves melting glass or a rod called a mandrill. “Glass naturally wants to form a bead,” he said.
In reality, it takes a fine touch to produce a round bead with a mix of colours. If you’re not careful, the different glass colours can meld together and look like mud. If done properly, the can create a beautiful mosaic.
Cavanaugh, who has 35 years experience working with glass, will be giving courses in glass work. The time and place will be based on the demand for the course. Call 250-814-5756 for more information.
