Corky Evans speaks at food security forum
MLA Corky Evans will be here to talk about food security this Saturday in a special event organized by the Revelstoke Food Matters group.
Evans, who is the current Opposition critic for agriculture and food, was responsible for the BC Sharing and Buy BC programs when he was minister of agriculture in the former NDP government.
“Corky is a provocative speaker, philosopher and entertaining storyteller who weaves history and the present to inspire creative solutions for the future,” said Antoinette Halberstadt of the Revelstoke Food Matters group.
Group member Sandra Rourke said Evans will “ take a look at Revelstoke’s food security, and stimulate discussion on where’s our food from, and where will it come from tomorrow.” He’ll also discuss globalization’s implications on the local food supply food supply and the importance of buying local food as well as issues such as irradiation and genetically modified foods.
Evans will be part of a two-speaker bill for the meeting, which begins at 5:30 p.m. with light refreshments in the MacPherson Room at the Community Centre.
Cathy English, the well-known curator of the Revelstoke Museum, will also be speaking about the area’s history as a an agricultural zone that once boasted many farms, orchards and ranches.
“Cathy will take us back to the vibrant food production that used to take place in areas such as the Industrial Park, Arrow Heights and out towards the airport, and in areas now flooded by the dam,” said member Rory Luxmoore.
