It’s going to cost more to bring your waste to the dump.

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District Board of Directors approved new tipping fees that will raise the price of bringing your waste to disposal facilities throughout the CSRD.

It will now cost $3 to get rid of one bag of garbage, no matter the size, an increase of $1 per bag. Fees have generally been increased across the board, though the cost of getting rid of some items such as drywall has decreased. You can see the full tipping fee schedule at CSRD.bc.ca.

The fees have changed slightly since they were first proposed in January. Initially, the CSRD proposed a $5 minimum, but the rates approved by the CSRD lowered the fee for single bags of garbage to $3.

The increases are being made after a report showed the CSRD faces an $18.2 million shortfall in the reserve fund established to cover the cost of closing its landfills in the future.

“The existing economic model (primarily tipping fee) for the solid waste function is not financially sustainable over the long term,” says a report by Ben Van Nostrand, the team leader for environmental health services for the CSRD. “Although current revenues are sufficient to cover the day to day operational and capital expenditures of the program, a significant short fall occurs when considering the implications of landfill closure and post-closure expenditures.”

The new fees will be in effect as of July 1.
