Starbucks may soon be brewing in Sicamous.

Word of the popular coffee franchise possibly setting up shop in the community came up at the Oct. 12 regular council meeting, during a brief discussion about September’s building stats.

Coun. Gord Bushell welcomed the number of commercial permit applications – five new construction and one new addition, totalling $556,920.

“We haven’t had any commercial business in town for quite a long time so it’s good to see that,” said Bushell.

After, Coun. Jeff Mallmes asked if one of the permits was for a Centex Gas Station/Starbucks.

In response, district planner Melinda Smyrl said staff have received an application for a development permit for a Centex gas station and Starbucks.

In a subsequent News interview, Smyrl said the district has received a development application from design firm Com-TECH Design of Calgary. The proposed development would include a gas station, convenience store and Starbucks drive-thru.The application relates to property at 1305 Rauma Avenue, the site of the former Extreme Power Sports on Highway 1, adjacent to Tim Hortons.

As of noon on Thursday, Oct. 13, the property was still owned by Extreme Powersports Inc.

Zoning for the site is highway tourist commercial, which allows retail sales and food and beverage establishments.

Smyrl said neighbouring properties have already received notification of the proposal, and the application is slated to be on the Oct. 26 council agenda.
