Constance Elizabeth Lang passed away peacefully at Queen Victoria Hospital in Revelstoke on the morning of November 16, 2014 at the age of 99 surrounded by her loving family. She had just celebrated her 99th birthday with family and friends on October 18th, 2014.

Connie, fondly known as “Bunny” by many, was born Constance Elizabeth Carolan on October 17, 1915 in Consort Alberta. After completing her nurses training in 1939 she nursed in Williams Lake and Vernon from 1939 to 1945. It was at this time that she bonded with and became lifetime friends with three other nurses. The four women kept in touch with each other regularly through the years right up to Connie’s passing. When the war ended Connie returned to her home town to reconnect with her family. The war years had been hard on the Carolan family. Connie lost three brothers. While Connie was back home she reunited with an old friend, Lloyd Lang. They eventually married and settled down in Cloverdale BC where they bought a plot of land and began a dairy farm business. These were busy years for the family feeding and boarding many farm hands and managing the cattle. Dairy farming was a good life where everyone helped out and the girls belonged to the 4H club. When Connie found the time she loved to read and could be found curled up with a book into late hours of the night even though she knew the cows had to be milked at dawn. Connie kept a close relationship with her only sister Mary, who lived in Alberta with her husband Cliff and their eight children. They talked often and saw each other whenever they could. Connie was also close to her older brother Tom who lived on Galiano Island. This led to Lloyd and Connie buying a small cabin on the island where they enjoyed many years of island life with their growing family. Connie and Lloyd loved to travel. Some of the places they were fortunate enough to visit were Hawaii, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand, Ireland, Spain and Africa. As they got older and Lloyd’s health deteriorated they stopped travelling but decided to spend six months a year in Arizona. This allowed them to spend time with one of their daughters and her family who had moved there in 1979. We all remember some wonderful trips down there to spend time with mom and dad in the warm climate. While in Arizona, mom enjoyed her 10 pin bowling, the pool, long walks and you would often see her peddling around on her 3-wheeler bike, grandchildren in tow. She continued to love her books. Even in her later years when macular degeneration took most of her eyesight she continued to enjoy audio books.

Following Lloyd’s death in 1998 Connie chose Revelstoke as her home where her youngest son Ross and his family lived. She found a place at Mt Begbie Manor where she lived for the past 16 years. She made many close friends there. You could always count on Connie for morning coffee in the common room and a good gab session. She also enjoyed her Monday bingo at the Seniors Centre, her Wednesday bus trips downtown with Emily for their hair appointments which often ended up at the Grizzly pub for wings and a brew. Connie could be found walking the halls at the manor with Carol and sister, (to keep in shape, she would say). The years at the manor saw many visits from family and friends including two large family reunions with her sister Mary’s family. These were known as the Lang/Long reunions as one sister married a Lang and the other a Long. These were such fun and memorable times. These are but a few of the highlights of a life well lived. There are many more stories and we hope that they will continue to be shared amongst family and friends in the years ahead.

Constance was predeceased by her husband Lloyd in 1998, three brothers during the war years, John, Bob and Gratton Carolan, her brother Tom in 1982 and her dear sister Mary who passed away in 2007 at the age of 95. She is survived by her six children: Colin (Margaret) Krueger of Port Colborne Ontario, Nora Kraft of Coquitlam, Jacquie (Jack) Dueck of San Diego, Betty (Dave) Japp of Kamloops, Gordon (Bev) Lang of Vegreville and Ross (Phyllis) Lang of Revelstoke; close family friends Hans (Doreen) Funk of Langley and Harry (Sharon) Tracz of Kamloops; 16 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren and many good friends. Life at the manor won’t quite be the same.

A celebration of life will be held at the family plot at Valley View Memorial Gardens in Surrey, in the spring of 2015, where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, Lloyd.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Audrey Austin and the homecare nursing staff for such wonderful care of mom in the past year. Mom prided herself in her independence and this allowed her to stay in her little apartment where she was comfortable and familiar with her surroundings. Special thanks to Dr. Rennie, the nursing staff at QVH (especially Shannon on the second floor and Gina in emergency) for going beyond their duties to make sure Connie was comfortable that her family was welcomed and encouraged to stay with her until the end.

Cremation arrangements were in the care of Brandon Bowers Funeral Home, Revelstoke.
