Fred Olynyk

February 21, 1917 -September 19, 2009

Long time resident of Revelstoke, Fred passed away peacefully at Ridgeview Lodge in Kamloops at the age of 92, surrounded by the love of his family.

Fred was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Mary, who passed in May 2009 and by his brother Harry.

Fred is survived by his brothers Steve [Mary] of Burnaby, Sam [Betty] of Revelstoke and his sister Alice Cooper [Tony Pratico] of Vernon. He will be dearly missed by daughter Janine [Jim Chambers], sons Ron [Susan], Ken [Arlene] all residing in Kamloops and son Jim [Joan] of Vancouver, 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Fred was born on the farm a few miles south of Revelstoke and spent his formative years there until he married Mary in 1939. Fred and family moved from the farm to Revelstoke in 1949. In 1997 Fred and Mary relocated to Kamloops to be close to their family.

While in Revelstoke Fred worked in the Forestry industry, was an ardent vegetable gardener and remained a sports enthusiast until his passing. Fred was an involved citizen in his community serving as an executive member on the boards of the Revelstoke Co-op, Credit Union and as president of the local and BC Senior Citizens association. After moving to Kamloops Fred remained active as an executive member with the Cottonwood Manor, Kamloops Seniors Village and Ridgeview Lodge.

Fred took great pride and joy in watching his children grow their families and in observing the relationships they developed. He was especially pleased to watch his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow and listened attentively as they often recounted their accomplishments.

The family wishes to express its heartfelt thanks to Dr. Harold Stefanyk and Sandi; also to the dedicated and empathetic care workers at Ridgeview Lodge [Baltic Ave.] A celebration of Mary and Fred’s life will be held in Revelstoke at the Catholic Church Hall (on Mackenzie Ave) on Saturday October 10, 2009 from 1-3pm.
