Mitchell Hewitt and Erin Lavoie were named Loggers of the Day at Revelstoke Timber Day on Saturday.
Clouds moved through the sky, but the rain held off as the Canlog professional returned to Revelstoke for the first time in several years. A dozen professionals logging sport competitors came from around B.C., Alberta and the northwest U.S. to take part and put on a show for the crowd of several hundred that filtered in and our of the Centennial Park grounds during the day.
Locals still had their fun, taking part in events like the axe throw, Groucho Marx and relay race.
Lavoie ran away with the women’s competition, winning four of five events. She finished first by more than 20 seconds in the underhand chop, edged Danielle Tkach by a mere 0.07 seconds to win the obstacle pole buck, and also took wins in the stock saw race and birling. She was also on the winning relay team with Hewitt and Anita Jezonski. Danielle Tkach won the axe throw.
Hewitt won the men’s obstacle pole buck and single buck races, and finished fourth in the hot saw race to win the men’s event.
Greg Byman and Ken Jaeger were honoured as Forest Industry Business Champions for their work running Rough Country Marine and Ken’s Repairs. Both men supported the forest industry by selling and repairing equipment. They both recently sold their businesses in order to retire.
“Both kept hundreds of saws running through good times and bad times,” said Brian Sumner, the president of BC Interior Forestry Museum in announcing the honours.
