The Horsey Ladies from Vernon rounded up $13,000 for local charities at their annual fundraiser.
This year, the venue was moved from the Spallumcheen Golf Course to downtown Vernon’s Schubert Centre. The banquet was a sell out, with 200 people in attendance on Friday, Nov. 17.
The Horsey Ladies committee gathers donations throughout the year for the silent and toonie auction. This year had close to 200 items on the auction table.
All the proceeds go to a charity that the ladies vote on that evening. The only requirement is that it is horse or animal related.
The top vote getters out of 18 charities were selected to share the $13,000 pot.
They are the Back Country Horsemen of B.C./Shuswap Chapter ($7,000), For The Ferals Vernon ($3,000), and the Turtle Valley Donkey Refuge of Skimikin/Chase ($3,000).
“We had some early evening excitement when the ATM machine became out of order during the fundraiser,” said Nancy Roman of the Horsey Ladies. “Two gals went out down the street to find a close ATM machine… there wasn’t one within a couple of blocks. So one of the committee members stepped up to offer e-transfers to pay for their auction purchases. Thankfully, it all worked out.”
