What does a great chili and great Indian food have in common? The best dishes are cooked for hours until the flavours combine into the perfect fusion. This commonality helped the 2012 winner take first place, despite the fact she'd never cooked chili before.
Paramjit's Kitchen took first place in the Revelstoke Spirit Fest 2012 Great Chili Cookoff, scoring 4.46 out of 5 with their Indian-themed curry.
Pam Sanghera told the Times Review that it was chef Goldie Sanghera's first ever time cooking chili. The Indian-influenced chili also came with steaming naan bread and was helped along by a great presentation, including server Mahalia Coulter dressed in traditional Indian clothes.
Organizer Meghan Tabor of the Revelstoke Chamber of Commerce said about 150 cards were sold. A few of the restaurants ran out, and not all the tasters went to each of the eight participating restaurants, so scores were tallied after these were subtracted. "We wanted to make it a fair score," Tabor said.
In second place was the Grizzly Sports Bar & Grill with a score of 3.46. The Village Idiot came third with a score of 3.29. Chef Joel Asher worried he'd run out quickly due to the gathering crowd on Mackenzie Avenue getting ready for the Revelstoke Spirit Fest Rail Jam.
Organizers only released the scores and rankings for the top three.
Proceeds from the sale of the judging cards will go to reimburse restaurants for their costs, and the rest will be donated to charity.
