Young anglers were up and at it bright and early Sunday, looking to hook one of numerous prizes at the Salmon Arm Kids’ Fishing Derby.
Not held since 2019, the annual Father’s Day event was back at the end of the Marine Peace Park wharf on Sunday, June 18, the docks below filled with young fishers and their families, as well as numerous volunteers.
The event ran from 6 to 11 a.m., at which point prize winners were announced on the wharf by organizers James Murray, Alyssa Vann (a past derby winner) and Rebecca Scott, with Mayor Alan Harrison assisting with picking the draw winners.
Winners were:
• First fish caught: Spencer Campbell;
• Largest fish caught: Liam Togado, 1st; Robbie Wilmore, 2nd; and Healthe Ridley, 3rd;
• Most fish caught: George Clark, 1st, Brode Freeman, 2nd; and Jayce Taylor, 3rd;
Hidden weight: Lila Potzold and Quinten Redlon.
Liam Togado also caught the most fish, six, but agreed to give that prize up to a fellow angler.
Held in conjunction with Family Fishing Weekend and sponsored by the Salmon Arm Recreation Centre, the fishing derby was open to children ages 12 years and under who were required to catch and play their own fish, with adults assisting only with netting the fish.
Murray expressed his gratitude to all the event’s sponsors who provided the numerous prizes won, and to the volunteers who helped make the event happen. He said for next year’s event, the top prize will be a boat.
