In 2017, Revelstoke Museum & Archives celebrated the 150th Anniversary of Canadian confederation by choosing 150 historic Revelstoke photographs.

Snapshot of History – 150 Revelstoke Photos provided an opportunity for people to view some of the best photographs in the museum’s collection, and to vote for their favourites. Over of period of 30 weeks, the museum posted a weekly gallery of 20 photographs on their Facebook page, and at the museum.

People voted for their favourite photos, and at the end of the project, the museum created a gallery of the top 50, with the next 51 to 150 photos in albums in the program room.

The photograph that received the most votes both online and at an opening reception in November of 2017 was a 1960 photograph by Estelle Dickey of 77-year-old Edmund Woods and one-year-old Henry Okumura, the oldest and youngest members of the Revelstoke Ski Club. It remains one of the most popular photographs in the Snapshot of History exhibit.

The Snapshot of History gallery will be coming down this month to make way for a travelling exhibit from the Royal BC Museum, entitled “BC’s Marvellous Mushrooms,” which will be open in the upstairs program room from April 29 to Aug. 17, 2023.

Snapshot of History has been a popular exhibit, and the museum is planning a send-off party to bid farewell to it, and to give people an opportunity to take home the photographs for their own walls. The Snapshot of History Farewell Party will take place at the museum on Thursday, March 16, and the photographs will be auctioned off in both a live and silent auction. Appetizers and beverages will be available, with a few quizzes thrown in for fun.

Stop by the museum in advance to take a last look at this popular exhibit, and plan to attend the event for a chance to take home a piece of Revelstoke history.
