A non-profit group that helps struggling families access needed items and services at no cost was the toast of Shuswap Women Who Wine’s latest Community Giving Event.

For their Saturday, June 18 event, held at R.J. Haney Heritage Village and Museum, Shuswap Women Who Wine welcomed guest presentations from Salmon Arm’s Mamas for Mamas, the SAFE Society and Voice of the Shuswap.

“These organizations presented on community projects they are looking to fund, and attendees voted by secret ballot for the organization they wished to receive the majority of the donation pool which was $4,545,” said Women Who Wine president Kailee Amlin. “After three moving presentations and much heart-string pulling, Mamas for Mamas won a majority vote for their Karma Market project and were awarded 80 per cent of all donations, totaling $3,636.”

The remaining 20 per cent was split between the SAFE Society and Voice of the Shuswap, each receiving $454.

Mamas for Mamas is a national charitable organization that supports mothers and caregivers in crisis by providing ongoing support to individuals and families facing various poverty-related struggles, Amlin explained in a media release. The group’s mission is to change the landscape of poverty through innovative approaches to financial barriers faced by struggling families.

In Salmon Arm, Mamas for Mamas offers its Karma Market, where struggling families can access what they need at no cost. The Karma Market is held bi-weekly and their volunteers provide diapers, wipes, formula, hygiene products and school snacks to the families who attend.

“All funds raised at Women Who Wine will go directly to filling the Karma Market shelves with these basic necessities as part of their At Risk Comprehensive Program,” said Amlin.

Since it began in September 2018, Shuswap Women Who Wine has given more than $137,000 to local non-profit groups. More information can be found at womenwhowine.ca.
