Students from Similkameen Elementary Secondary School got two firsthand opportunities to learn about local government with the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen.
Grade 5 students from SESS were visited by communications staff and RDOS directors George Bush, Spencer Coyne and Jason Wiebe on May 15, as part of Local Government Awareness Week to share information about local governance and the programs the RDOS provides.
The Union of B.C. Municipalites takes the third week of May each year to bring awareness to the roles and responsibilities of local governments.
During their visit, the directors answered questions about and talked about their roles as elected officials on the RDOS board as well.
“Local Government Awareness Week is an opportunity to share information about how the Regional District provides services and programs where people live,” said Wiebe, who sits as a director on the board on behalf of Keremeos.
“It was fun speaking with students about my role as a mayor and a member of the RDOS Board of Directors.”

The students had a second learning opportunity on May 19, joining the RDOS’ board meeting digitally. The RDOS Board of Directors answered students’ questions and provided further insights about their roles and responsibilities.
