Award-winning Vernon theatre brings back power-house play

Butterflies Are Free fundraiser to get production to B.C. Mainstage Festival

Powerhouse Theatre achieved resounding success with their recent presentation of Leonard Gershe’s beloved play, Butterflies Are Free.

The company’s performance captivated audiences, and adding to their triumph, Powerhouse Theatre had the opportunity to showcase their talents at the Okanagan Zone Festival in Kelowna, where they shared the stage with numerous acclaimed theater companies from across the region.

The production won several awards, including a Merit Award for ensemble work, best sound design (Jackson Mace), honorable mention for best costume design (Leigh Van Dyke), best set décor (Sarah McLean), best set design (Chris Bayne), best performance by an actor in a leading male role (Devon Wheelhouse), and runner up for best production.

Powerhouse will now be presenting Butterflies Are Free at the highly anticipated Theatre BC Mainstage Festival in Surrey.

“Scheduled for mid-July, this prestigious event brings together the best theatrical talent from across the province, and Powerhouse Theatre is proud to be a part of this celebrated gathering,” said Emily MacArthur with the Vernon theatre. “Participating in this esteemed event is not only a tremendous honour but also a remarkable opportunity for Powerhouse Theatre to showcase their talent on a provincial scale and connect with fellow theater professionals.”

In preparation for the festival, Powerhouse has decided to remount Butterflies Are Free for two exclusive performances at their home venue, July 7, 7:30 p.m., and July 8, 2 p.m. This serves a dual purpose, not only allowing local audiences another chance to experience the magic of the play but also helping the company raise funds to support their participation in the Theatre BC Mainstage Festival.

“Butterflies Are Free is a captivating exploration of freedom, love, and personal growth, which has resonated deeply with audiences during its initial run,” said MacArthur. “The decision to bring it back to the Powerhouse Theatre stage allows theater enthusiasts to relive the outstanding performances and witness the masterful storytelling once more.”

Tickets for these two exclusive performances are expected to sell quickly, so theater enthusiasts are encouraged to secure their seats well in advance. Don’t miss this extraordinary opportunity to support Powerhouse Theatre and experience the magic of Butterflies Are Free.

Tickets available at ticketseller.ca or 250-549-SHOW.
