Revelstoke’s Roxy Theatre was tapped as one of three theatres across British Columbia to open the multi-generational Indigenous film, Bones of Crows, on Friday (July 14).
While the film will be new to Revelstoke, Duncan, and Quesnel –where it will open this week– its international premiere was in September at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film was written and directed by award-winning filmmaker, Marie Clements. The story follows the life of a Cree Matriarch, Aline Spears.
To depict Spears’ life, three actresses play the role of Aline throughout the film, including Summer Testawich; Secwépemc actor, Grace Dove; and Carla Rae.

The film covers a wide range of topics that present themselves throughout Spears’ life. Spears, who is a musical prodigy, is taken to a residential school with her sisters. The film catalogues how Spears and her family must combat systemic starvation, sexual abuse, and racism as they endure the traumatic residential school system and its multi-generational effects.
The film appeared in film festivals across the world from Canadian festivals to New Zealand to Berlin. Packed with stars from the big and silver screens, the dramatic film highlights the resiliency of Indigenous Canadians.
