Ginger Shoji to paddle in Florence after walking the distance of Canada

The breast cancer survivor is raising money to compete on the international stage with the Spirit Warriors

Ginger Shoji remembers the day she was diagnosed with cancer well. She felt helpless, scared and anxious.

But since that fateful day some 15 years ago, the now 68-year-old Revelstoke woman has started walking, paddling, exercising, and living with purpose.

Last year, she completed her walk of the entire distance of the Trans-Canada Highway, from coast to coast. That’s pretty far. Like, 7,821 kilometers far.

When Shoji walked her last kilometer in April 2017, she says about 400 people showed up to walk with her.

“It was magnificent, and really beautiful,” said Shoji. “I never expected the community to come out like that.”

Now, the cancer survivor is asking the community to support her again.

Shoji is walking the distance between Revelstoke and Florence, all without leaving Revelstoke.

She has just under 1,000 kms to go and is hoping to complete the distance by June 30.

Shoji will compete on the international stage in Dragon Boating with a team of breast cancer survivors in Florence this July.

Unfortunately, not all of those the survivors who make up her team, the Spirit Warriors, are able to afford the cost of the trip.

So Shoji is trying to do her part to help them make it there—one bra-shaped cookie at a time.

Shoji has raised over $2,600 of her $3,000 goal selling the $5 cookies in just two weeks.

You can e-mail a donation to gggshoji@gmail.com, or pick up a cookie at Big Mountain Kitchen, Conversations Coffee House, Pure Image, Salon Safari, Rough Country Marine, and 1st Impressions hair and salon.

The International Breast Cancer Dragon Boat Festival will take place in Florence July 3-8.
