Have you ever had the chance to return to your childhood home?

The weekend of May 12 the Huffmans spent the weekend there.

Bette, Jim, Mariann and Susan grew up in the house at 403 Mckenzie Ave, which is now available as a holiday rental.

It was their mother’s dream castle, built in 1899 and purchased by the family in 1942 or ‘43.

“The memories that you have,” said Susan. “The basement is still as spooky as it was when we were little.”

The family sold the house in ‘74. By then all of the kids had moved on. Bette still lives in Revelstoke, Jim and Mariann live in Vernon and Susan lives in North Vancouver.

But they come back to town every few years, and have visited the house since moving out, but being able to stay in it for the weekend is something else all together.

They mostly slept in their old bedrooms, except for Jim, who’s bedroom is now a bathroom.

Much of the original interior and exterior is intact. In the master bedroom there is still a dent in the flooring from Susan rocking her crib back and forth as a baby and on the wall on the main floor is a never-before-seen photo of the Huffmans’ mother on her wedding day.

“She’s still here,” Susan said with a smile.

Even though Susan hasn’t lived in the house since she was 19 years old, she said it is still home.
