Revelstoke's Latino community is bringing the fiesta back to town Monday, May 5, inviting the public to a friendly soccer match with refreshments to celebrate one of the most culturally important days of the year for Latinos in Canada.
Cinco de Mayo, historically marked by Mexico's 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla, will see community members from various Latin American countries take to the turf 5:30 p.m. at Centennial Park for a partido amistoso, as a selection of soda chills in a nearby cooler.
"Come with all the family, enjoy with all our Latino community in Revelstoke," the event poster reads in Spanish. "We'll make mixed teams and have a cooler with some drinks for starters. You can bring more to share."
Those interested in attending and playing are asked to come sporting an athletic shirt of their choice, preferably either red or blue in colour, so each jugador and jugadora can be paired with a team.
The Latino community has continued to grow and flourish in Revelstoke over recent years, representing youth and adults from places including Mexico, Chile, Peru and Colombia.
Other community members can join and message the Latinos en Revelstoke Facebook group at facebook.com/groups/2511072652374639.
