Annual winter permits are now available to recreationists wanting to access Winter Restricted Areas in Glacier National Park.
The annual and daily permits, in force as of Nov. 15, are part of a system to educate and protect back-country users to the dangers related to avalanche control.
There are approximately 130 avalanche paths along a 40-kilometre stretch of Highway 1 running through the park. With the province's avalanche control program, all slopes adjacent to this corridor are closed for the winter.
"The Winter Permit System was implemented to allow individuals with winter permits access to some of these areas when avalanche control is not being conducted or anticipated. The system protects backcountry users from the danger of artillery gunfire, the flying fragments from projectiles, and the resulting avalanches," reads part of the quiz that must be completed, with a score of 100 per cent, to receive an application form for annual permits. The quiz takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. Those aged 19 and under must have written approval from a legal parent or guardian to submit an application.
"If you don't have enough time, Daily Winter Permits must be obtained on the day you plan to ski or snowboard and are only valid for that day," explained Tourism Revelstoke via social media, adding daily permits are only available at the Rogers Pass Discovery Centre.
"Please ensure that the winter restricted area you are visiting is open, and that you are carrying the necessary gear, a valid photo ID, a national park pass, and a valid Winter Permit," advised Tourism Revelstoke. "Check the daily Avalanche Bulletin from Avalanche Canada to determine the current conditions before heading out."
The Rogers Pass Discovery Centre is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nov. 15 to Dec. 18, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 19 to March 26, and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 27 to April 30. For more information, call 250-837-7500 (Monday to Friday) or email mrg.information@pc.gc.ca.
