The number of campsites in Blanket Creek Provincial Park south of Revelstoke will be almost doubling this season, the BC Government announced Thursday.

58 new campsites will be added to the park, the Ministry of Environment announced, adding to the 63 that are already available.

Dave Kaegi and Sally Thomson of West Kootenay Parks, which manages Blanket Creek, explained the plan includes 44 new individual campsites and two group sites that can accommodate eight RVs each.

The sites have been roughed in but still need to be finished, they said. The work will include a new shower building, with facilities for men, women and disabled people. The park opens on May 12 and the new sites should be ready by June.

They said the park has been at capacity during the summer for the past four of rive years.

"We've been operating into campground overflow for many years, so the demand to put these sites in was definitely there," said Thomson.

The new sites will be reservable on the government's Discover Camping website.

The news was part of a major announcement of hundreds of new campsites around the province.

Further south, 20 new sites will be created at Halfway Hot Springs, which was turned into an official recreation site last year, doubling the number of campsites available there.

The new campsites are being built as part of 1,900 announced in the BC Parks Future Strategy.
