The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure says this is a substantial blast required for safety reasons, so material removal will take longer than previous blasts.

Two more closures for smaller blasts will be scheduled after July 13, to complete this phase of work.

Two-way traffic will continue through the site until further notice. Road users can expect delays of five to 10 minutes daily between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

In May, slides in Summerland resulted in the closure of a portion of Highway 97 at the bottom of Summerland Hill. The area also was affected by two landslides in late April.

Since the May 15 slide, crews have been working to clear the area and stabilize the bluffs.
