The City of Revelstoke has been placed under a boil water advisory Friday morning.
Mayor Mark McKee told the Review that an intake pipe into the Greeley water treatment plant became disconnected, causing it to bypass the filtration and chlorination system.
"Unfiltered, untreated water from Greeley Creek has gotten into the system," he said.
The incident happened at around 4 a.m. and was discovered when public works crews showed up to work at 5 a.m.
The boil water advisory went out at 8:11 a.m. In a bulletin, the City said residents should boil water for drinking, brushing teeth, preparing food and preparing beverages until further notice.
McKee said the city hopes to complete repairs later today, then it will have to flush the untreated water from the system.
"Realistically it's probably one or two days for the boil water to be lifted," he said.
