Family makes emotional plea 1 year after murder of Oliver man

James Cummings was shot and killed outside an Oliver home on June 12, 2022

The family and loved ones of James Cummings are making a plea to the public for information on the murder of James Cummings in Oliver one year ago.

Cummings, 61, was shot outside a residence on Pine Ridge Road on Osoyoos Indian Band land around 4 a.m. on June 12, 2022.

The Oliver RCMP called in the major crime unit after responding to the 1000-block of Pineridge Drive shortly before 4 a.m. on Sunday, June 12, 2022.

A man had been shot, and despite life-saving efforts by an associate of the victim, when officers and the ambulance arrived, the 61-year-old man had succumbed to his injuries.

The investigation into the murder continues to be led by the RCMP Southeast District Major Crime Unit. At the time, police said they didn’t believe the shooting to be random.

To date, numerous investigative avenues have been explored and, in an effort to protect the integrity of the investigation, police are unable to share those findings publicly at this time, said Staff Sgt. Jason Smart, of the Southeast District Major Crime Unit.

“Cummings’s family and loved ones continue to suffer with not knowing answers to this senseless tragedy, and are pleading with the public for anyone to come forward with any information regarding his murder,” said Smart.

Anyone with information is urged to call their local RCMP or the Southeast District Major Crimes Unit information line at 1-877-987-8477.
