A special weather statement is in place for multiple Okanagan highways and cities.
Freezing rain and ice pellets are expected to start around midnight and into Sunday morning (Nov. 19) on the Coquihalla Highway, the Okanagan Connector and Highway 3 from Hope to Princeton. The statement also affects the following cities: Kelowna, Vernon, Salmon Arm, Merritt and Princeton, while the Southern Okanagan is not affected.
“A frontal system will move across the BC interior tonight and Sunday,” said Environment Canada in the statement. “Warm air aloft with lingering cold air in valleys will create localized patches of ice pellets and freezing rain across the region during the night. As the warm air aloft retreats in the early hours of Sunday morning, precipitation will change to light snow. The snow will end or taper to showers later on Sunday.”
The West Kootenays are also affected, including Castlegar, Nelson, and Grand Forks.
The freezing rain has the potential to make driving conditions slippery.
