Good Samaritans spring into action after stabbing outside Kelowna mall

The suspect and victim know each other

Two Good Samaritans helped a woman who was stabbed outside Orchard Park shopping centre on Wednesday, June 14.

Before 10 a.m. on Wednesday, an officer on patrol was flagged down by a bystander to let them know about a stabbing at the bus loop outside the mall. When the officer arrived at the scene, two people were holding down a man who stabbed a woman at the bus stop. They had witnessed the stabbing and jumped into action by pulling him away from the victim and restraining him.

The officer arrested the suspect and quickly performed first aid on the victim until emergency services arrived. The victim suffered several injuries and was rushed to Kelowna General Hospital where she had to undergo emergency surgery. She is expected to make a full recovery.

According to the RCMP, the suspect and victim knew each other. There is no threat to public safety.

The suspect faces several charges including aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose. He was taken to jail and remains in custody.

“This was a disturbing and violent attack on an individual going about her daily activity,” said Kelowna RCMP Media Relations Officer Cst. Mike Della-Paolera. “The swift actions of the two witnesses and the first aid provided by the attending police officers, were influencing factors in the outcome of this incident.”
