The B.C. Highway Patrol arrested a man at gunpoint in Kelowna after noticing what appeared to be a gun in the vehicle, on April 19.
At approximately 12p.m., a patrol officer pulled a distracted driver near the intersection of Old Vernon Road and Highway 97. When the officer approached the vehicle, they noticed what appeared to be a hand gun in the centre console.
The officer then drew his pistol and arrested the driver for weapons possession without incident. The driver is known to the police.
A further search of the vehicle revealed stolen property including various identification, mail box keys, and break-in tools.
The driver’s gun was later found to be a replica ‘airsoft’ hand gun, designed specifically in appearance to resemble a real firearm.
“This was an extremely tense situation,” said Const. Bevan of BC Highway Patrol Kelowna.
“This firearm was designed and was being used specifically to mimic the real thing. I would like to thank all of the nearby motorists for their co-operation and their adherence to safety during this incident.”
The Kelowna RCMP was called in to assist the Highway Patrol team, but the arrest was over by the time the Mounties arrived on the scene.
Const. Mike Della-Paolera with the Kelowna RCMP said that the arrest was initiated by the BC Highway Patrol.
Cpl. James Grandy with the BC RCMP Communication Services said that the incident was resolved quickly.
The man, who was already prohibited from driving, has been charged with multiple offences under both the BC Motor Vehicle Act and Criminal Code. He has been released on an Appearance Notice to attend Court in June and the vehicle was impounded for 7 days.
