Competitors sweated it out in heavy rescue gear, navigating through smoky enclosures, diesel fires and hot, sunny conditions today in Revelstoke.
B.C. mine rescue teams competed in the 2011 North Central and South Zone Mine Rescue and First Aid Competition in the old dirt bike track off of Powerhouse Road in Revelstoke.
One competition saw teams jury-rig a rope and pulley system to lift a boulder off of an injured miner's leg.
An enclosure rescue exercise saw teams don breathing gear, extinguish a diesel blaze and then rescue several men from a smoky enclosure.
Winners from the regional competition advance to the provincials, which take place this Saturday at several locations near Centennial Park and the Revelstoke Community Centre.
It's free and the public is welcome.
