A mudslide forced an eastbound CP Rail freight train to make an emergency stop early Thursday morning.

CP Rail workers are in the process of cleaning up a mudslide that came down on railway tracks near Sicamous sometime before 5 a.m.

CP spokesperson Andy Cummings said at 5 a.m. on Thursday, March 16, an eastbound mixed freight train “encountered a mud that was effecting tracks ahead, about nine kilometres west of Sicamous.”

He said the train crew initiated an emergency stop. The train went into the debris-covered portion of the track but did not derail.

“There were no injuries, no public safety concerns and no product was released as a result of the incident,” said Cummings.

“Crews are now on site working to carefully move the train from the effected track, and then they will begin the process of clearing the tracks of material from the slide.”

Cummings had no information on when the track might be cleared to reopen.
