The 2023 Vernon Sun Valley Cruise-In is ready to bring hundreds of classic cars to Vernon next weekend.
After a triumphant return last year, Vernon’s annual three-day car show is set to hit the streets from July 7 to 9.
The fun will start Friday, July 7, with a BBQ meet and greet at Performance Hoist (388 Kyro Road in Lumby) from about 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Cars will cruise from the Regional District of North Okanagan building to the BBQ starting at 3:30 p.m.
On the Saturday, the Lions Club will host a pancake breakfast from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Watkin Motors (4602 27th Street in Vernon. Then it will be time for a scenic cruise out to Lumby. The cruise will leave Watkin Motors at 11 a.m., travelling down Highway 6 to Dure Meadow Road down Whitevale Road, arriving in Lumby around 11:30 a.m. After a 10 minute stop beside Oval Park, the cruise will continue out to Mabel Lake Road to Rawlings Lake Road and then to Highway 6, back through Lumby and out to Buchanan Road.
People are encouraged to come out to the end of their driveways and wave to the passing cars as the cruise goes by.
After the cruise is a downtown show from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. 30th Avenue in Vernon will be shut down to make room for roughly 200 cars.
The Sunday will feature the main show with about 400 cars in Polson Park. There will also be a pinup contest, a swap meet and live music by Dixie Fried Hep Katz. There will be another Lions Club breakfast from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and awards will be given out at 1 p.m.
“It’s just a generally fun weekend with so much going on, we’re hoping our numbers will be up a little bit more than last year. Last year was good but I think we can probably do better this year,” said Randy Barton, co-chair of the committee that puts on the Sun Valley Cruise-In.
Barton says in terms of the types of cars at the event, there will be “everything from A to Z,” and there’s no restrictions on how old cars have to be. He said most of the cars will be classic cars and hot rods.
