Tomorrow night, the Revelstoke Performing Arts Centre will host the first youth-led art festival, ‘Encore’.

Created by students, art by students, and put on by students, the event is youth-led from start to finish. Inspired by the LUNA Arts Festival, the goal was to have a young version of the city’s iconic art festival. The result was ‘Encore’, which will happen tomorrow evening (Mar. 9), from 6–8 p.m. Creative Director of ‘Encore’, Pearl Pratico, spoke about how the event came together.

“How cool would it be if we had something like LUNA, but just for youth,” asked Pratico.

With pieces contributed by artists as young as 12, and up to 18-year-old senior high school students, there will be a variety of pieces to take in tomorrow night. The event will also have live performances on the hour inside the theatre, while attendees take in the other installations outside in the foyer.

As a dancer of more than 10 years, artistic expression is something that has always been important Pratico. ‘Encore’ was Pratico’s brain child as her capstone project for grade 12.

The project was initially funded by a grant from Dance West Network, who help facilitate dance projects across the province. Along the way, ‘Encore’ was also given a helping hand from local organization, Arts Revelstoke, who helped the project come together.

Artistic direction is something that Pratico said she ‘definitely’ sees herself doing in the future, but the nature of the event being youth-led means that this will be her first and last time as creative director for it.

“We hope to continue this, that’s why it’s called ‘Encore’. We hope that this happens every year,” said Pratico.

The doors will open at 5:45 p.m. tomorrow, with the shows starting at 6. It’s a non-profit event, so admission will be by donation.
