Septage disposal fees cut by more than half

The fee for getting rid of septage waste in Revelstoke has been reduced by more than half, the Columbia-Shuswap Regional District announced.

The new fee for septage waste disposal was lowered to $45 per tonne from $110 per tonne. The district's board of directors voted on the reduction at its June 16 meeting.

The original fees were put in place to cover the costs for putting in place existing infrastructure, including monitoring, environmental studies, construction and maintenance, states a staff report on the matter.

According to the report, those costs have been covered and the new fees will be used to cover future operational and maintenance costs.

The new bylaw amending the fees also includes a provision to ticket people who dump their refuse when the facility is closed or carry unsecured loads.
