Skiers fined for being in Parks prohibited area

Four backcountry skiers have been fined $115 each for entering restricted areas in the Mt. Klotz area of Mount Revelstoke National Park.

The group of four skiers was caught leaving the area, which is closed to prevent people from disturbing or displacing at-risk mountain caribou.

A park warden apprehended the group at about 4 p.m. on Feb. 10, and fined them under the Canada National Parks Act.

According to a Parks Canada media release, the area is critical habitat for the South Columbia caribou population. Four caribou and a calf were recently spotted in the area.

Parks said closure notices and maps are available on their website.
