UPDATE: Trans-Canada closed outside of Revelstoke

The Trans-Canada highway is closed in both directions out of Revelstoke until at least Saturday evening, according to DriveBC.

West of Revelstoke, the highway is expected to be closed until 4 p.m. East of Revelstoke, the highway is expected to be closed until around 8 p.m. East of Golden, the Trans-Canada is closed until Tuesday.

The closures are the result of high avalanche hazards along the route, the result of heavy snow over the past few days.

On Friday, the highway closed after a natural avalanche came down on the road in Glacier National Park, just west of Rogers Pass.

More than 80 cm of snow has fallen in the area over the past 72 hours and that "conditions are very unpredictable," Daniluck said Friday evening.

An Environment Canada snowfall warning for the region was lifted Friday afternoon and replaced with a freezing rain warning.
