A line of cars sits in traffic following a serious accident on the Trans-Canada Highway east of Revelstoke on Friday

UPDATE: Two dead, one critical after Trans-Canada crash near Revelstoke

A serious crash on the Trans-Canada Highway has left two dead and one in critical condition; highway closed from Revelstoke to Golden.

A serious crash on the Trans-Canada Highway Friday afternoon has left two dead and one in critical condition.

RCMP say that two woman are dead and one other is in critical condition following the four-vehicle crash that took place about 30 kilometres east of Revelstoke at around 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 2

There was no word on the cause of the crash. RCMP are on scene investigation, while the BC Coroners Service was also called in and Air Ambulance is on route.

The highway is not expected to open sometime between 8 p.m. and midnight, DriveBC reports.

This is the second fatal crash on the Trans-Canada near Revelstoke this week. The highway was closed for about eight hours on Dec. 27, due to an accident west of Revelstoke. That incident caused an influx of visitors into Revelstoke, many of whom scrambled to find a place to stay. The Visitor Information Centre and other individuals worked to find people places to sleep.

The current closure closure comes at a bad time for the Visitor Information Centre, which closed earlier in the day due to renovations taking place next door that was causing the staff to feel ill.

Judy Goodman, the executive director of the Revelstoke Chamber of Commerce, said she would be posting a note to the door of the VIC letting people where to look for places to stay. She also sent out an e-mail to accommodations and restaurants letting them know of the likely influx of travellers into town.

People are asked to use the RevySell Facebook group and the Stoke List if they are in desperate need of a place to stay
