A Vancouver man died while climbing the west ridge of Mount Tupper on Monday.

One man is dead after a climbing incident in Glacier National Park Monday morning.

Carl Douglas, 61, from Vancouver, was climbing the west ridge of Mount Tupper with two others when the rock he was holding onto broke away, causing him to fall 300 metres down the mountain at around 8 a.m.

RCMP say the group of three was properly equipped for the technical, fifth-class climb up the west ridge, which is a popular route for mountaineers.

Parks Canada Mountain Safety, the Revelstoke RCMP and the BC Cororners Services attended the scene of the incident.

Douglas was a botany professor at the University of British Columbia.
