Police in Calgary say they have arrested a man in Airdrie, Alberta and have called off their Amber Alert for missing persons Kathy and Alvin Liknes and their grandson, Nathan O'Brien.

Police say they believe the three missing family members are dead, although their bodies have not yet been found.

"The decision was reached that this is now a homicide investigation and that charges would be appropriate against an accused individual," said Hanson.

Calgary police Chief Rick Hanson said a man was arrested at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Monday morning and faces two counts of first degree murder and one count of second degree murder.

CBC has since reported that a man named Douglas Garland will be charged with their murders.
