A long weekend getaway to Osprey Lake near Princeton turned into a nightmare Sunday, May 21 for a visiting family when a young girl was attacked by a dog.
The six-year-old was at a FireSmart and barbecue event, hosted by Hayes Creek Volunteer Fire Rescue, when the incident occurred at about 1:20 p.m.
“Kinsley fought the dog off and the owner just sat there and didn’t help her,” said Drew Stewart, the girl’s stepfather.
“A couple brought their Bull Mastiff to the event. My daughter went over to the pet the dog a few times and it was fine. And she went once on her own and the dog attacked her.”
She suffered numerous wounds to her arm.
“As soon as her mom noticed it was Kinsley screaming, she ran over to her and put pressure on her forearm until first aid came and wrapped her up. We hopped in the car and raced to the Princeton hospital.”
Kinsley received 13 stitches, under anesthesia, and was released.
Rob Miller, deputy fire captain of the Hayes Creek department, confirmed details of the incident.
First responders on hand took control, he said.
“The dog bit the child on the arm and within seconds the child was being treated with bandages, dressing, ice and compassion,” Miller told the Spotlight. Those providing care included the fire chiefs of Erris and Hayes Creek, and a retired RCMP officer.
“911 was immediately called…Our hearts go out to the child.”
He added RCMP have contacted dog owners, who left the scene while the girl was being treated, and parents.
Stewart, his partner Randelle and their children were visiting family in the area over the long weekend.
The breed of the dog has not been confirmed.
