Charles "Cyril" Keates passed away at Queen Victoria Hospital on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at the age of 88. There will be a Celebration of Life Service at the Revelstoke Community Centre on Thursday, October 24, 2019 at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, #4 1551 Sutherland Avenue, Kelowna, BC V1Y 9L9.
Cyril was born on July 27, 1931 in Newman's Cove, Newfoundland. He moved out west in 1956 and made Revelstoke his permanent home in 1958. He worked for McDonalds Grocery, which eventually turned into Coopers Foods, and in 1959 was hired on with Parks Canada as a Purchaser until he retired in 1989. He and
Ursula married in 1977 and spent the next 42 years by each other's side. They enjoyed many weekends at their cabin on the Arrow Lakes and driving across Canada to visit his family in Newfoundland. Cyril loved his family dearly. He enjoyed the outdoors and spent many days/nights over the years camping, fishing and hunting. He will be remembered for his animated conversations and his loving greetings. Cyril was a Lifetime member of the Rod and Gun Club, served on the Executive for the Revelstoke Curling Club and Moose Lodge, coached Minor Hockey, served as Director for the Revelstoke Credit Union & was a member of the Revelstoke Legion. Cyril was also a faithful member of the United Church.
Cyril was predeceased by his parents Mary and William Keates. He experienced the loss of his first wife Estella "Jean" Keates in 1968 and his second wife Lorraine Keates in 1971. He is survived by the love of his life, Ursula Keates, and their faithful dog Sadie of Revelstoke; sister Ann, and sisters-in-law Dot and Jeanette all from Newfoundland; children: Lloyd (Melody) Keates of Revelstoke, Barry (Sharon) Keates of Revelstoke, Glenn (Carol-Ann) Leidloff of Armstrong, Marina (Fred) Dunn of Agassiz; grandchildren: Jeany (Chris), Diana (Chris), Tanya (Andrew), Kevin (Rose), Amanda (Kevin), Riley, Keira, Charlie (Danica) and Benn; great grandchildren: Tiryn, Brooklynn, Sienna, Jordyn, Cooper, Daisy, Cora, Jacob, Brooke, Henry, Oscar, Ila, Molly and Hunter; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The Keates Family would like to thank Dr. MacDonald & Dr. MacLeod, as well as the many nurses who cared for Cyril throughout his last few weeks.
