Jul 18, 1940 – May 9, 2018
George lost his courageous battle with cancer. Left to mourn are his loving wife Verla, sons; Greg (Dawn) and Tim of Airdrie, son Wade & daughter Cheryl-Lee (Blaine) of Calgary. Step daughters Sharon (Rick) Tappen, Deborah (Ian), Cheryl-Ann (Mike) Lorry, all of Kelowna. Several grand children, nieces and nephews as well as 3 brothers Orville, Gerald, Peter and 1 sister, Rose.
George was born in a small farming community in and around Minitonas, Manitoba. While he lived at home he assisted in running the family farm and in the winters working in the forest cutting down trees. Perhaps it was when he was chopping down trees, he decided that carpentry was more to his liking. He left home before he was twenty years old and went to Calgary. After a few years of training and working as a carpenter George and his family moved to Revelstoke.
He worked on the Mica Dam project and later he teamed up with Herb Lausman and started Tru -Line Construction. When his partnership dissolved George went to work for Braniff Construction, working with this company George lived and worked in many different parts of B.C. and somewhere along the line moved his expertise from carpentry to the art of working with concrete. After leaving this company, he spent a few years working with Hector Scarcelli’s concrete business in Revelstoke. Then he decided to take his concrete skills to India where he worked on a major dam project with Joe Stagliano.
After he returned back to Canada he settled in Kelowna. Here he worked with Mario Lopez and his crew until retiring. He spent his retirement years with his lovely wife Verla doing some traveling and a lot of bowling.
George was known for his cooking skills. He made his famous 3 pot borscht, cabbage rolls, roladin and of course, his crispy nutty decadent chocolate treats. He loved to share his squares with many. If he came to visit, he brought his treats. He was a very generous thoughtful man.
A celebration of Georges life will be held Saturday May 19th at 2:00 p.m. at Everden Rust Funeral Services – 1910 Windsor Road, Kelowna BC 250-860-6440.
