The King and Queen of the Mountain event got underway at Revelstoke Mountain Resort (RMR) on Saturday morning.
“Do a flip,” yelled a young spectator.
“Okay!” replied a snowboarder, who flung a flip off the jump below.
The King and Queen of the Mountain happens annually at RMR, with snowboarders and skiers, men and women, all competing for the crowns. The riders are judged on their performance over two days of competition, including one day of freeriding and the other in the terrain park. Today (March 18), the riders took on the freeride section of the contest, dropping in on the SWF run.
SWF has been closed since March 18th, to give the riders the best snow to land in. While the snow looked like a pillow, competitors said that the top layer was a bit crusty, making the landings tricky.

The chairlift riders got a bird’s eye view of the event as the lift runs directly above the run, but most spectators lined the edges of the run to watch. Snowplowing their way down the neighbouring black diamond tree runs, people gathered in clusters near the jumps yelling “oohs” and “ahs” as the competitors jumped, spun, and flipped off the features in front of them.
Tomorrow, the competition moves down to the terrain park below SFW. With more jumps, rails, and boxes to choose from, riders and skiers won’t be short of options for the high score.
The action will get underway after 10 a.m. tomorrow. Spectators were invited to drop by the ‘spectators’ zone’ for some hot dogs and refreshments.
The royalty will be crowned at 5 p.m. tomorrow evening at the Paul Mair Plaza, with more après to follow at the Mackenzie Tavern.
