Revelstoke Grizzlies goalie Devin Degenstein of Camrose, Alta., has been selected a KIJHL Star of the Week for Jan. 19-25, after recording his second shutout as a rookie.

Revelstoke Grizzlies goaltender Devin Degenstein is making a name for himself this month with his recent selection as a Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) weekly spotlight player.

"I was pretty excited," said the 19-year-old from Camrose, Alta., who learned that he'd be celebrated as one of three chosen KIJHL Stars of the Week for Jan. 19 to 25.

"It was actually just after practice we found out, so lots of congratulations from the whole team."

Leading up to this spotlight, Degenstein said it's been a lot of hard work this year, having sealed his second shutout last Friday, Jan. 17, while facing the Merritt Centennials. He left the visitors empty-handed, making 29 saves and facing 13 shots in the second period alone to secure a 3-0 Grizzlies win.

"We put in lots of time on the ice, and in the gym," he said, noting he practices at the Revelstoke Forum every day with fellow Grizzlies goalie Ryder Ponto.

"Our coaches have been really good," Degenstein acknowledged. "Good organization."

Skating since the age of four, he finds his greatest hockey inspiration in Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey Price.

Degenstein, having been in Revelstoke since October, appreciates the support of its hockey community, even for a city half the size of his hometown. He stands with a record of 12-0 from 15 games with the Nelson Leafs and Grizzlies combined, losing one in a shootout.

Looking forward, the Grizzlies "need to push," Degenstein said. "We're looking really good now. Just need to push past playoffs and get the championship, just like last year."

The Grizzlies next face the Osoyoos Coyotes on Friday, Jan. 24, followed by the Columbia Valley Rockies on Saturday, Jan. 25. Both games start at 7 p.m.
