It was another successful Okanagan Valley championship meet for the Revelstoke Secondary track team last Thursday.

The team continues to rank at the top of the North Zone, with a Valley pennant in the senior girls division and runner-up pennants in the grade eight girls, junior boys, and senior boys divisions.

Leading the team effort were outstanding performances by the “Woman of the Meet,” grade 11 Elizabeth Elliot, and the “Man of the Meet”, grade nine Matthew Arnold.

“Liz had an outstanding day,” said Rob Brown, the distance running coach. “She qualified (for provincials) in all three of her events and broke a couple of school records in the process. Her 800 metre time will pit her as one of the top seeds in the province.”

Matt Arnold also broke a couple of school records in the junior boys shot put and hammer throw events. No stranger to the podium after his silver medal performance at provincials in Nanaimo last year, Arnold continues to impress even though he is competing against athletes a year older.

Another highlight of the day were the results from the rookie grade eight athletes on the track, specifically in the hurdles. Rebecca Grabinsky, Lane Bull and Isaac Starling all had very fast times in the sprint hurdles and there is a good chance their marks will be good enough for an invite to provincials in Langley.

“That grade eight boys race was great,” sprint/hurdles coach Jeremy Weddell said. “Watching Lane and Isaac pull away from the field was fantastic. They had a 10-meter lead on everybody else by the end.”

Several other athletes had a great day and qualified for the provincials on June 1–3 in Langley. Junior and seniors get an automatic berth by finishing top-four at the valley championships, while grade eights need to be one of the top 24 in the province to get an invite.

Juniors and seniors who qualified are Jacob Ancell, Matthew Arnold, Hanna Bartmann, Erin Behncke, Sara Birch-Rasmussen, Alana Brittin, Anja Claus, Megan Cottingham, Elizabeth Elliot, Kate Granstrom, Mitch Kovacs, Cam McKenzie, Lowell Schmidt, Aiden Smith, Spencer Spannier, and Andreas Suchovs.

Grade eight hopefuls are Isobel Bray, Mack Buchanan, Lane Bull, Jaclyn Elliot, Rebecca Grabinsky, Kaity Herle, Cassidy Legebokow, Emily MacLoed and Isaac Starling.
