Avalanche Awareness Day coming to new Boulder Mountain Cabin

The new Boulder Mountain cabin was completed late last year.

The brand new cabin on Boulder Mountain will be site of this year’s first Avalanche Awareness Day event in Revelstoke on Saturday, Jan. 15.

The cabin, which is the work of the Revelstoke Snowmobile Club, opened last month to much praise from club members and users of the trails on Boulder Mountain.

With only a small window between snow melt and the first snow fall, the club had to work fast to get the cabin finished, particularly due to its backcountry location.

Avalanche Awareness Day is being held to mark the official grand opening, though snowmobilers have been visiting the cabin and tasting the food there since last month.

The day’s activities go from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and include a poker rally near the cabin, with four stations, including beacon search, probing, conveyor shovelling techniques and what’s in your pack.

A party will be held that night at the River City Pub featuring a live auction, food and drink specials and ski and sled movies to raise funds for public avalanche safety.

The snowmobile club also has an ongoing fundraising drive to support the Canadian Avalanche Centre. Information on how to donate can be found at revelstokesnowmobileclub.com.
