Revelstoke Timber Days takes place on Saturday, July 9 this year. The event follows the scaled-down format introduced last year that emphasized local participation, organizers say. The 2010 event included a birling pond for the first time and it proved wildly popular.
Organizers are seeking to drum up support for the event. Here's a media release they sent out this week:
The one day Timber Days LITE for locals was so much fun last year that the Timber Days organizing group has decided to stay with that format again this year.
Mark your calendar for Saturday, July 9 for this celebration of our forestry heritage.
The day will be jam-packed with the hotly contested berry bake-off and auction, pie gobble and logging sports events for men, women and kids. Professional competitors will be on site to demonstrate their high speed chopping and other skills.
"Last year the new log birling pond was the highlight and it will be back this year," says Nadine Overwater, a member of the organizing group. "Staying on a wet, spinning log when someone is trying to get you to fall off isn’t easy, but it’s fun, and it’s funny to watch!"
There were so many competitors last year that organizers have decided to add elimination events in the morning. Competitors are warned to pre-register this year or be on the grounds early to be registered by 11:30 a.m. to compete in the birling and axe throw events.
Or if you’d rather not compete, bring your family and come watch local folks in the choker race, old-fashioned cross-cut bucking and noisy chainsaw bucking events. Bets are out about whether the men on the cross cut will beat the old two-man chainsaw again this year!
Little ones can compete in a choker race and nail hammering. There are great prizes for everyone.
Rumour has it that Downie Timber and Stella-Jones are donating three logging truck loads of prime larch and birch firewood for the auction.
Kids activities, music, a refreshment tent and concessions will keep everyone happy.
