130 years ago: The Kootenay Star, March 17, 1894

Western Milling Co. boasted oranges and lemons for sale, Bickerton the cobbler advertised his hand-made shoes, and R.S. Wilson, merchant tailor, told customers that: “I Can Suit You with a suit that you will not be ashamed to be seen wearing in any company.”

120 years ago: Revelstoke Herald, March 17, 1904

A piano tuner from Toronto would be visiting Revelstoke; residents were encouraged to put in orders for tuning at the Canada Drug & Bookstore.

110 years ago: The Mail-Herald, March 18, 1914

A convicted criminal who escaped from jail in Boise City, Idaho many months ago was recaptured in Revelstoke. A letter the escapee wrote to his mother revealed that he was in BC, and the sheriff chasing him coincidentally ran into him at a hotel after a disappointing day of no leads.

100 years ago: Revelstoke Review, March 12, 1924

A public meeting was to be held the upcoming Saturday to discuss the means of raising money to build a skating and curling rink.

90 years ago: The Revelstoke Review, March 16, 1934

C.B. Hume’s department store was attracting large crowds for its award-winning display of maple leaves from the previous fall’s maple leaf contest put on by the Canadian Pacific Railway.

80 years ago: The Revelstoke Review, March 16, 1944

The Canadian and American governments announced a joint survey of the Columbia River in Ottawa the previous week.

70 years ago: Revelstoke Review, March 18, 1954

The Revelstoke Figure Skating Club was introducing a Saturday matinee show for unaccompanied children to attend, which would allow adults to enjoy the evening shows without the “unruly behaviour” of unsupervised children.

60 years ago: Revelstoke Review, March 12, 1964.

The official Nels Nelson Ski Jump record of 278 feet set in 1958 by Finnish jumper Kalevi Karkinen was tied once and broken five times during the O’Keefe Tournament of Champions held in Revelstoke. The new record holder was American jumper Ansten Samuelstuen, who jumped 282 feet.

A group of Revelstoke people implemented the federal government’s multiculturalism policy by forming a multicultural society that was to meet twice a month.

40 years ago: Revelstoke Review, March 14, 1984

Lack of skiers at the Mount Mackenzie ski hill resulted in the hill being closed down early for the season despite good snow conditions.

30 years ago: Revelstoke Times Review, March 15, 1994

The Mount Mackenzie Do It On Skis ski patrol event had participants in all manner of dress compete in a number of wacky events, including an obstacle course, to raise money for ski patrol supplies.

20 years ago: Revelstoke Times Review, March 17, 2004

There was a moose on the loose around Arrow Heights. Local conservation officers were asking residents to keep their dogs tied up until he moved out of the area.
