Revelstoke locals Mary and Randy Puso have opened a new Asian market, Puso Pinoy, to serve Revelstoke’s growing and diversifying community.
Prior to opening the store, Mary explained that she and her husband would travel to Kelowna and Calgary to source ingredients to cook their native Filipino cuisine. “It’s our comfort food,” said Mary.
Some of these ingredients include produce like bok choy and fish, which are readily available in their fridge and freezer.
Mary explained that mackerel and tuna are commonly used in Filipino cooking but difficult to find in Revelstoke. Filipino baked goods are also featured in the front of the store, made in Canada but in the Filipino style of baking. Mary explained that Filipino breads and desserts have a different and distinct flavour, “almost milkier,” she said.
Besides supplying ingredients for Filipino cooking, the Puso’s have stocked their shelves with other Asian products such as beverages from Korea.
Puso Pinoy opened on March, 31 and can be found on 302 MacKenzie Avenue.
