Young Revelstokian alpine skier, Yorke Parkin, received an exciting farewell Monday morning (Feb. 26) before hitting the highway to compete in the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Calgary.
With two lines of sign-holding supporters forming a corral, Parkin was sent off with the warmest wishes on Monday morning. Even EMCON’s plows were out to wish him well with a loud honk.
“Send it Yorke,” said one sign.
“You rock Yorke,” read another.
The group cheered as Parkin went out to say hello. He stopped for some high-fives from his supporters before jumping back into the car for the trek to Calgary for the games.
Last year, Yorke made headlines for his impressive performance at the provincial level, where he brought home three gold medals for Revelstoke, competing in some instances against athletes twice his age.
The games in Calgary start on Feb. 27 and run until March 2.
A strong performance in Calgary could send Parkin to the World Championships in Italy.
Backed by cheerful supporters, Parkin stood in front for a photo holding a sign that summed up the scene.
“Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt!”
