There was a flash of excitement when a black bear ran through downtown Revelstoke on Wednesday afternoon.

The bear ran down Garden Avenue, through an alleyway between Second and Third Streets, then down Rokeby Avenue to the river bank before disappearing from view.

The bear appeared scared and confused. Bob Gardali, who was working outside of the Woolsey Creek restaurant, said the bear tried to run up the tree outside the restaurant before making its run to the river.

Many people scattered and watched as the bear ran through the area.

RCMP and Conservation Office were called, however the bear was gone by the time the RCMP arrived. As the RCMP officer noted, this is bear country and if the bear appears scared of people, that's a good thing.

According to WildsafeBC Revelstoke, bear sightings in town are up significantly this year.
