UPDATE: Two Mile fire contained, suspected to be human caused

Firefighters work into the night to get blaze under control

Update: 9:45 a.m. May 30:

The Shuswap Emergency Program reports the fire that broke out yesterday on a wooded hillside above Mara Lake in the Two Mile area south of Sicamous is under control and nearly extinguished.

Crews from BC Wildfire, the Malakwa Fire Department and the Sicamous Fire Department are mopping up the fire this morning after working late into the night to bring it under control.

An air tanker was used on the fire before darkness fell and the ground crews used water from a nearby creek to help control the blaze.

The fire is suspected to be human-caused so residents are reminded to use caution with fire or other heat sources as areas are already drying out.

Original Story:

Work is underway to control a fire in a forested area near Sicamous.

The blaze is being battled in Two Mile, above a trailer park along Highway 97A.

Sicamous, Malakwa and Swansea Point firefighters are on the scene, stationed on Graham Road, as are members of the BC Wildfire Service.

Four planeloads of retardant have already been dropped on the fire, and firefighters are preparing to move in.

The fire is reported to be small, .01 hectare, and tentatively contained.

More information will be provided as it becomes available.
