Revelstoke Secondary students are not the only ones getting report cards this month.

The Fraser Institute’s annual report card of secondary schools in the province was recently released, ranking 251 public and independent schools based on several indicators for 2018.

The think-tank rankings are determined from provincewide exams, graduation rates, and gender gaps.

This year, Revelstoke Secondary School scored 8 out of 10, placing them 24th out of 251 overall. In 2018, Revelstoke’s graduation rate was 100 per cent and no students failed a provincial exam.

By comparison, nearby communities scored significantly lower. Golden placed 226th, Salmon Arm 70th and Vernon 47th.

In last years report card, Revelstoke was 30th.

However, Mike Hooker, school district superintendent for Revelstoke, said the report card does not provide any new information.

“Revelstoke usually does well.”

He continued that the district places little weight on the rankings.

“It’s a limited scope of information.”

Hooker said the list does not take into account other important indicators, such as how many students transition to post secondary afterwards, trade schools, or individual student responses like sense of belonging and adult support.

“It’s missing lots of important stuff.”

What is significant for a school in Surrey, may not be so for Revelstoke said Hooker. It’s not fair to judge them side by side he continued.

“Most school districts probably don’t put much weight on it.”

Two schools were tied for first: Little Flower in Vancouver, an independent all girls school and Brentwood College on Vancouver Island. Both scored 10 out of 10. Four school were tied for last place: Port Hardy, Hazelton, Chase and Lillooet.
